Power
If you think that skills and job performance alone will insure your success and continued employment, you are working on a false assumption. Having power and influence in your organization is critical to your success. That is the message Jeffrey Pfeffer, Stanford University Professor, makes in his latest book: Power (Harper Business, 2010).
Dr. Pfeffer starts with an explanation that performance alone will not guarantee your success. He then outlines, step by step, why power is important, where to start, how to create it and behave in the organization, and how to keep it. He emphasizes that all organizations are hierarchical and all organizations display power dynamics.
As a business person, power is important. In fact it is essential if you are to achieve your objectives. Denying its importance will not change organizational dynamics as Dr. Pfeffer eloquently points out in his book.
It is an important read for anyone who is looking to better understand how to improve their perform and achieve success in their organization. And, for that matter, in any phase of their life.
